Obituary for Joyce Jewell Harbourt

Joyce Jewell Harbourt (Michalis)
October 26,1940- April 2, 2023

Joyce Harbourt of Titusville, NJ passed away at the age of 82 on April 2nd, 2023 at Capital Health Hospital in Hopewell Township. Born in Trenton, she is the daughter of the late Dorothy and Detective Lieutenant Harry Michalis of Hamilton Township Police.

Joyce grew up in Hamilton Township, NJ and graduated from Hamilton High West. Joyce worked in the State House where she met her husband Olaf W.B. Harbourt, a NJ State Trooper assigned to then Governor Richard J. Hughes. Olaf and Joyce married in 1961, and made Titusville NJ their home.

Joyce then became the personal secretary for New Jersey Governor William T. Cahill, eventually following the Governor and supporting his law practice.

Joyce then became Executive Assistant Peter Sweetland, President of the Medical Inter Insurance Exchange (MIIX). MIIX grew into a national company, when Joyce chose her position as Executive Meeting Planner. The Meeting Planner allowed her to travel with both family and friends both in the contiguous United States as well as her favorite destination, Hawaii. Joyce retired in 1993, spending time with her beloved husband Olaf until his passing in 1999. Joyce remained in the Titusville home she loved until her unexpected passing this April.

Joyce and Olaf were married 38 years and raised two sons Harry William, and John Thomas, both of whom went into law enforcement like their father and grandfather. Harry and his wife Carla of Stockton, NJ gave Joyce two grandchildren, Nina Alexandra, Harrison William. John and his wife Jennifer of Tabernacle, NJ gave Joyce a grandson, Sonny. Joyce loved her grandchildren above all else, and made sure everyone knew it.

Joyce then met her caring partner of almost 20 years, Joseph Cappelletti. In addition to being a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother, Joyce was very close to her best friend and sister Sharon Swan, speaking with her every day.

Joyce is survived by Sharon and her husband Rick Swan of Oxnard, California. She is also survived by Sharon and Rick’s children, Dr. Richelle Swan PHD, and her partner Chendo Bretado, Alicia and her husband Brad Hutchins and their two children Bryce and Avery, cousins Kathie Barnes and partner Ian Gregory, Jan Betor Esq. and partner Tom Vargo, George Betor and wife Cathy and their children Tyler, Cody and Travis. She enjoyed spending time with her companion Joe, her oldest friend Judy Bozarth and her” lunch bunch”. She also enjoyed meeting up with her high school friends, watching her grandchildren’s activities, and spoiling her little dog Dottie.
